Letting Loose
Don’t you just adore autumn? Call me crazy, but I love the fall season for the two C’s: Cleaning and Colors. Come the cool weather, I am passionate about diving into my closets and pruning. I so enjoy picking up a pair of jeans and saying, and meaning “ah, we have had some good times.” And then, letting go and adding them to the subtraction pile. It is revealing as allow me to become aware of the stuff that just doesn’t suit me any more. And I just adore that satisfying feeling as I lovingly pack the stuff for donation. I say, “Oh, new people and new adventures await you, my old friends.” Of course, the other pay-off is the buoyant feeling of anticipation of “now what new clothes do I want?”
I bet you don’t think I am so crazy now.
And then there are the Colors. Every bush and tree is burning with red, gold, yellow and orange. It is heaven on earth to walk thorough the woods on a cool, dry autumn day.
Recently, I savored just such a heaven on earth day. My heart was bursting with appreciation as I walked a nearby forest. I saw colorful foliage. I caught a glimpse of graceful hawks soaring the skies. I watched a huge momma-spider nimbly haul an even larger egg-sac. I smiled at yellow mushrooms cleverly growing up the side of a tree. I contemplated life. I reveled in feeling good. I savored thoughts of letting loose and how well-being just flows right in.
Then I spied something truly magnificent: a mid-life fallen tree, with a huge root system. The root system was as big as an oversized table. Up close, the roots were beautiful and intricate. Many roots still clung tightly to large rocks and dirt. There it was: tall and fallen. I guess the woods simply didn’t suit the tree anymore. And I imagined new life springing up in the place where this tree once stood.
Looking at the scene, I couldn’t help but contemplate the Journey. Sometimes we let loose right away. Sometimes we cling to things far beyond the time that it suits us. Sometimes it takes a strong wind or heavy rains to bless us with freedom and new options.
Life is a process of learning what to keep and what to let loose of. And now, I’d have to say there is a third C to mention. And that is Choice. I like Choosing.
I Choose Letting Loose.
