Who hasn’t walked a beach and dreamed of discovering buried treasure or a message a bottle? Well, dear friends, that dream came true for me this week. While I was swimming in The Cove in La Jolla, California, a message in a bottle floated right into my hands.

It was the funniest thing. The bottle just bobbed in the tide, as if it was waiting for me to pick it up. And so, I did. I received a message in a bottle.

By the time I swam to shore, my husband and others gathered to lay their eyes on this spectacular little surprise. A couple from Illinois exclaimed, “Wow, that is cool” and others chimed in with heartfelt sentiments like, “I have always dreamed of that happening to me.” Little children danced in the sand and smiled in eager anticipation as we opened the well-sealed bottle.

Inside was a charming note that began with “Ahoy!” A man named Jacob M. of Phoenix, Arizona mailed the package on 8/2/08. So this hardy little bottle drifted from only-Jacob-knows-where for over a year. Naturally, we shared this happy tale with everyone we met on our trip from The Cabrillo Monument to the Carmel Valley hotel staff. Our trip to San Diego was truly a dream come true.

But there is so much more to appreciate here. For while this is a sweet story; one I’ll tell for a long time to come. And, while we are eager to contact our new friend and hear the details of the bottle’s beginning, there is so much more meaning to this story than the mere discovery of a message in a bottle.

I am passionate about the blue, blue ocean, animals and any opportunity to harmonize with them. The Cove at La Jolla is a treasured sanctuary for goldfish, pelicans, seals, sea lions and many others. I was snorkeling that morning, listening to the rhythm of my breath while being dazzled by the goldfish and bluefish only a few feet below. Then, I felt the soft and clear impulse to ditch my gear on land and swim free-style into the welcoming waters. It felt heavenly to watch majestic pelicans floating in the sky. A pelican even glided within a foot of my outstretched hands. Sheer Bliss!

With that full and blessed feeling beaming from every pore, I turned to the shore line to take-in the magnificent view. And there it was: a message in a bottle. It came right to me, as if to say: “hello, we have been looking for you, and there you are.”

So you see, my friends, the real message wasn’t the message IN the bottle at all. The real message was IN the moment. And the INspired Action Journal message of this true story is: “Do what you love, for the joy of doing it, and let things come to you.”
